Dir. Ousmane Sembène. 2004, 124 mins. 35mm print. With Fatouma Coulibaly, Maimouna Hélène Diarra, Salimata Traoré. Sembène’s last feature film, Moolaadé, takes place in a rural village where the traditional practice of female genital circumcision is still prevalent. Sembène dramatizes a clash of values at the foundation of African culture; he described this as the most African of all of his films. The film was the second in a planned trilogy exploring the heroism found in daily life, people Sembène called “heroes to whom no country gives any medals.” Samba Gadjigo, Mount Holyoke College, is the author of Ousmane Sembène: The Making of a Militant Artist.Free with Museum admission.
