Mala Noche
Dir. Gus Van Sant. 1985, 78 mins.
Shot on 16mm black-and-white film with local Portland actors, Mala Noche is Van Sant’s ultra low-budget first feature film; introducing his familiar focus on marginal groups and male relationships. In the film, a meditation on love, lust, obsession, and class, a gay skid-row store manager falls hopelessly in love with a Mexican teenager who is an illegal immigrant.
