The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover with Larry Cohen in person
Thursday, November 3, 2011, 7:00 p.m.
Followed by a Pinewood Dialogue with Larry Cohen
Dir. Larry Cohen. 1977, 112 mins.
With Broderick Crawford, James Wainwright. While Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar is one of the year’s eagerly awaited big studio releases, the most unabashedly entertaining, sharply intelligent, and extensively researched biopic on the subject remains maverick director Larry Cohen’s chronicle of forty years in the life of FBI Chief J. Edgar Hoover. Made in Cohen’s trademark pulp style, the film shows Hoover from the time of Prohibition, through the Red Scare of the 1950s, the Kennedys, the wave of cultural changes and civil rights in 1960s, while also examining the startling mysteries of his private life.
