Dirs. Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace. 2012, 105 mins. Oscilloscope Laboratories. With James Murphy and LCD Soundsystem. In April 2011, LCD Soundsystem played its final show at Madison Square Garden after the band’s leader, James Murphy, decided to disband the celebrated and popular dance-punk group, and also decided to give the group “the best funeral ever,” with the biggest, most ambitious concert of its career. The instantly sold-out, near four-hour extravaganza was an emotional, unforgettable experience. Shut Up and Play the Hits is simultaneously a document of a once-in-a-lifetime performance and an intimate portrait of front-man James Murphy as he navigates both the personal and professional ramifications of his decision to discontinue the band.
The film will be shown in theaters across the country on July 18, as a special one-night only theatrical engagement. The Museum’s beautiful state-of-the-art theater, with outstanding digital projection and acoustics, is the perfect setting for this unique cinematic and musical experience.
