Poland. Dir. Lukasz Palkowski. 2014, 120 mins. With Tomasz Kot, Piotr Glowacki, Szymon Piotr Warszawski. This enormously entertaining biopic chronicles the groundbreaking work of Zbigniew Religa, the pioneering Polish surgeon who defied the Communist bureaucracy of the 1980s to perform the country’s first successful heart transplant. Told with wit, verve, and a fastidious attention to period detail, this snappily paced, true-life medical saga—winner of Best Film at this year’s Polish Film Awards—is both an engrossing portrait of a larger-than-life personality and a vivid recreation of a unique moment in history.
Tickets: $12 ($9 for senior citizens and students / free for members at the Film Lover level and above). Order tickets online. (Members may contact [email protected] with any questions regarding online reservations.)
