Hungary. Dir. Virág Zomborácz. 2014, 93 mins. With Márton Kristóf, László Gálffi, Eszter Csákányi. A father and son with a strained relationship get a shot at reconciliation—after the older man’s death. In life, Janos is a pastor devoted to helping people in need, who is unable to muster compassion for his troubled twenty-something son. After Janos dies unexpectedly, the young man begins seeing his father’s specter everywhere, initiating a process in which the two men must make peace with each other in order to move on. Part tender coming-of-age tale, part darkly comic ghost story, Afterlife is a surprising, poignant fable from one of the most distinctive new voices in Hungarian cinema.
