Science Goes to the Movies: The Morality of Drones
With hosts Faith Salie and Heather Berlin in conversation with Pamela Abshire, Bertram Malle, and Wendell Wallach
Presented as part of the World Science Festival
Cutting edge technology has radically changed modern warfare and the modern soldier, perhaps exerting its greatest impact through the introduction of automated drones. In this live edition of CUNY TV's Science Goes to the Movies, journalist Faith Salie and neuroscientist Heather Berlin lead an exploration of the technical, ethical, and psychological effects of drone warfare, as dramatically depicted in clips from films such as Eye in the Sky. Their guests will be bioengineer Pamela Abshire, cognitive scientist Bertram Malle, and bioethicist Wendell Wallach. Join the Museum and World Science Festival for a lively and engaging conversation sweeping across the battlefield and the big screen. Program runs 90 mins.
Pamela Abshire is a bioengineer who directs the Integrated Biomorphic Information Systems Laboratory at the University of Maryland.
Dr. Bertram Malle is a psychologist specializing in moral decision-making and behavior who teaches at Brown University.
Wendell Wallach is a scholar at Yale University's Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics who specializes in machine ethics and friendly Artificial Intelligence.
Science Goes to the Movies is made possible by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and CUNY TV.
