The Black Stallion
Dir. Carroll Ballard. 1979, 118 mins. Digital projection. With Kelly Reno, Mickey Rooney, Teri Garr. Walter Farley’s novel about a boy and his “wild” horse that are stranded on an island after a shipwreck and then come back to the U.S., is brought to life beautifully in what Roger Ebert called “a wonderful experience at the movies” for people of all ages. Mickey Rooney plays a retired jockey who helps train the stallion to race against the fastest horses in the world in this timeless film produced by Francis Ford Coppola. Recommended for ages 8+.
