Mur Murs with Documenteur
Mur Murs (Dir. Agnès Varda. 1980, 82 mins. DCP.) During a stay in Los Angeles, Varda created this kaleidoscopic documentary about the murals that decorate the city. Bursting with color and vitality, Mur Murs is an invigorating study of community and diversity and an essential catalog of public art.
Followed by Documenteur (Dir. Agnès Varda. 1981, 65 mins. DCP. With Sabine Mamou, Mathieu Demy) This small-scale fiction/documentary hybrid about a divorced mother and her child (played by Agnès Varda’s own son) leading a quiet existence on L.A.’s margins was made directly after Mur Murs. The two films, different in form and tone, are complexly interwoven, with overlapping images and ideas.
