India. Dir. Mangesh Joshi. 2016, 104 mins. DCP. U.S. Premiere. In Marathi with English subtitles. With Chittaranjan Giri, Ashwini Giri, Seva Chouhan, Om Bhutkar. Nicknamed after the machine he works so skillfully on, Lathe Joshi is one of the last of his kind: a talented craftsman in an increasingly industrialized, technology-driven society. But when his workshop is forced to close, Joshi suddenly finds himself adrift in a world that seems to no longer value his expertise, a world that prizes quantity over quality, profit over people. Rather than fall by the wayside, Joshi takes a stand to reclaim his dignity. Filmed in a lyrical, meditative style, the sophomore feature from director Mangesh Joshi is both a moving portrait of a man and a perceptive look at globalization’s human toll.
