In the summer of 2015, legendary musician David Byrne staged an event at Brooklyn's Barclays Center to celebrate the art of color guard: synchronized dance routines involving flags, rifles, and sabers. The idea was to match color guard teams from across North America with acts such as St. Vincent, Nelly Furtado, Devonté Hynes, tUnE-yArDs, Ad-Rock, and Ira Glass, all of whom created original music that they then performed as live accompaniment at the show. For their part, acclaimed documentary filmmakers the Ross Brothers (Western, Tchoupitoulas, 45365) went beyond merely recording these performances and built upon them for this beguilingly immersive, kaleidoscopic film. The viewer is thrust onto the floor and hustled backstage, and shown everything from candid moments between the stars and their teen collaborators to color-soaked fever-dream depictions of the performances themselves. Like the event it chronicles, Contemporary Color is a concert/theater film unlike any other. Winner of Best Cinematography and Best Editing at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival.
