Age of Assassins (Satsujinkyojidai)
Redstone Theater
With Tatsuya Nakadai in person. Post-film discussion moderated by critic Simon Abrams
Dir. Kihachi Okamoto. Japan. 1967. 99 mins. 35mm print from the Japan Foundation with the permission of Toho. With Tatsuya Nakadai. This will be the fifth annual visit to the Museum by the legendary Japanese actor Tatsuya Nakadai. One of the greatest actors in cinema history, Nakadai has starred in movies by Akira Kurosawa, Masaki Kobayashi, Kon Ichikawa, and Mikio Naruse, among many others. In the delightfully madcap spy thriller Age of Assassins, Nakadai gives one of his greatest comic performances, evoking Jerry Lewis’s nutty professor as a bumbling criminology professor with bad athlete’s foot and a deep affection for his dead mother, who transforms into a debonair spy. The cheerily convoluted story line includes a diamond hidden inside a boy’s body, eugenics, Nazis, and caged women.
