Dir. Ridley Scott. 1991, 130 mins. 35mm. With Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis, Harvey Keitel, Brad Pitt. In 1991, Thelma & Louise, the movie about two outlaw women on the run from their dull lives, was a revelation. It was an unlikely breakthrough in male-dominated Hollywood; a movie about women in search of freedom, written by Callie Khouri, a disenchanted music-video producer, and starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis. The film earned six Academy Award–nominations and a Time magazine cover asking “Why Thelma & Louise strikes a nerve.” Becky Aikman’s rousing and deeply researched new book Off the Cliff: How the Making of Thelma & Louise Drove Hollywood to the Edge (2017, Penguin Press)looks at the vivid personalities behind the making of this milestone film. Aikman will introduce the screening, which will be followed by a book signing.
