Munich
Dir. Steven Spielberg. 2005. 164 mins. 35mm. Eric Bana, Daniel Craig, Marie-Josée Croze. Working from a screenplay by Tony Kushner and Eric Roth, Spielberg fashions a sophisticated, controversial, at times Hitchcockian thriller following the revenge mission taken by five Mossad agents—led by Eric Bana’s tortured Avner Kaufman—tasked with eliminating the Palestinians allegedly responsible for murdering eleven Israeli athletes in the 1972 Munich Olympics. Made and released during a difficult and frightening moment, when the United States was still reeling from and puzzling over the attacks of 9/11, Munich wrestles with the realities of living with terrorism and the dubious efficacy of war and vengeance.
