Screening & Live Event
A Letter to Three Wives and David Bordwell lecture
Saturday, October 28, 2017, 3:00 p.m.
Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater
Preceded by a lecture by David Bordwell
Dir. Joseph L. Mankiewicz. 1949, 103 mins. 35mm. With Linda Darnell, Jeanne Crain, Ann Sothern, Kirk Douglas. In a world of station wagons and school outings, the local flirt has run off with somebody’s husband. But whose? Vera Caspary’s script and Mankiewicz’s urbane direction mix social satire, comments on women’s strategies for upward mobility, and a domestic whodunit about bedroom-community intrigue. A virtuoso feat of multiple-viewpoint plotting, with audacious voice-overs from a crucial character whom we never see. The screening will be preceded by an illustrated lecture by David Bordwell about 1940s cinema, and will be followed by a book-signing.
