Portrait of Jennie
Sunday, October 29, 2017, 6:00 p.m.
Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater
Dir. William Dieterle. 1948, 86 mins. 35mm. With Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotten, Ethel Barrymore, Lillian Gish. What Duel in the Sun does for the western, this does for the supernatural romance. David O. Selznick turns a modest fantasy premise into a delirious ode to eternal love and the artistic imagination, complete with alternative universes, reincarnation, looming post-Kane compositions, and shifts from black-and-white into color. The radiant Jones plays Jennie at many ages, while Cotten, a quintessential ‘40s presence, is the discouraged artist who comes to believe he can escape time.
