Introduced by Vanda Krefft, author The Man Who Made the Movies: The Meteoric Rise and Tragic Fall of William Fox

Dir. F. W. Murnau. 1927, 94 mins. DCP of restoration with original Movietone soundtrack. With Janet Gaynor, George O’Brien. The adventurous studio chief William Fox hired the great German director F. W. Murnau to direct Sunrise, one of the masterpieces of silent cinema. This exquisite story of love, marriage, temptation, and the lure of the big city is so bursting with glorious visual poetry that one can easily see why it won Best Unique and Artistic Production at the first ever Academy Awards ceremony. The screening will be introduced by Vanda Krefft, whose new landmark biography shows how William Fox, who grew up in Lower East Side tenements, became a visionary and pioneer whose legacy is central to the history of Hollywood. The screening will be followed by a book signing in the Museum Store.
