Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater
Dir. Dee Rees. 2017, 134 mins. DCP. With Garrett Hedlund, Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Rob Morgan , Jonathan Banks, Jason Mitchell, Mary J. Blige. Surpassing the promise of her debut feature Pariah, Dee Rees has made one of the year’s most impressive and ambitious dramas, adapting Hillary Jordan’s post–World War II novel about two families—one black, one white—who confront different levels of racism in WWII–era Mississippi. A thrillingly old-fashioned period film, Mudbound, which premiered at Sundance just after the inauguration this year, is achingly timely.
