Museum of the Moving Image - Bartos Screening Room
Cuba. Dir. Tomás Gutiérrez Alea. 1971, 130 mins. Digital projection. With Marés González, Luis Alberto García. In Spanish with English subtitles. The year is 1672, and a group of Cuban revolutionaries lead an uprising against the Spanish occupying their country in the Remedios region. Demons are unleashed when a priest, responding to their interests, wants the community to relocate. The obscurantist crusade causes death and destruction. The film is inspired by Cuban anthropologist Fernando Ortiz's book of the same name, based on real events. A classic of Cuban cinema, digitally restored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
