Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Screening Room
Dir. Agnès Varda. 1985, 105 mins. 35mm. With Sandrine Bonnaire, Macha Méril, Stéphane Freiss. Vagabond, a triumphant return to fiction filmmaking by Varda (her first in eight years), was inspired by a phenomenon in the early 1980s of young women stepping outside of society and becoming drifters. Sandrine Bonnaire gives a brilliantly ferocious performance as Mona, whose dead body is found in a ditch at the beginning of the film. With a structure inspired by Citizen Kane, Mona's final days are pieced together by the memories of people she encountered.
