Discussion with Annette Insdorf
Dir. Andrzej Wajda. 1974, 179 mins. DCP. In Polish, German, Yiddish, and Russian, with English subtitles. With Daniel Olbrychski, Wojciech Pszoniak, Andrzej Seweryn. Wajda’s epic historical drama is set during the late nineteenth century in Łódź, the craddle of Polish textile industry. Three friends, Karol (a Pole), Max (a German), and Moritz (a Jew), set up a textile factory, and use tricks enforced by ruthless cotton magnates. After fire consumes their brand new factory, their paths diverge. Wajda has created a teeming, vivid depiction of the brutality and tumult of capitalism.
