Dir. Zhao Liang. 2015, 95 mins. Digital projection. Labor issues are transnational; the struggle is universal. Zhao Liang’s transcendent, award-winning work of nonfiction cinema filters an aesthetically audacious vision of Chinese coal mining through Dante’s Divine Comedy, making clear the dehumanizing effect of capitalism run amok. The hellish landscape of Inner Mongolia is contrasted with a poetic meditation on social upheaval, creating an unique and galvanizing blend of fury and contemplation. The people vs. the machine, in eternal struggle. —Robert Greene
