With filmmakers Arthur Pratt, Barmmy Boy, and Banker White in person
Dirs. Arthur Pratt, Banker White, Anna Fitch. 2018, 90 mins. Told through the eyes of Sierra Leonean filmmaker Arthur Pratt, Survivors presents a remarkable portrait of his country during the 2014 Ebola outbreak, exposing the complexity of the epidemic and the sociopolitical turmoil that lies in its wake. The film chronicles two Sierra Leonean healthcare workers during what is now widely regarded as the most acute public health crisis of the modern era.The film is the result of a collaboration more than a decade in the making: In 2010, American producer and director Banker White co-founded the WeOwnTV Freetown Media Center with local filmmakers Pratt and Barmmy Boy, with the goal of supporting artists and journalists in the region. The collaboration took on new meaning in the context of the Ebola outbreak, yielding this feature documentary that witnesses the bravery and humanity of people caught in an unfolding crisis, the devastating effect of the outbreak on families and communities, and the misunderstandings between international NGOs and the communities they serve. With Sierra Leoneans’ distinct voices both behind and in front of the camera, Survivors profoundly wrestles with what it means to be a Sierra Leonean at this critical juncture in the country’s history.
