Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater

Dir. Joel Coen. Prod. Ethan Coen. 1987, 94 mins. 35mm. With Nicolas Cage, Holly Hunter, Trey Wilson. The delightfully sophomoric sophomore feature from the brothers stars Nicolas Cage as a dim-bulb bandit whose solution to ex-cop wife Holly Hunter’s infertility is to kidnap one fourth of a gaggle of famous quadruplets—sending the new “family” on the run through a relentlessly oddball, cartoon-crazy vision of the Southwest that is part Preston Sturges, part Looney Tunes. Grounding its screwball antics in a surprisingly moving tale of familial love and redemption, Raising Arizona was met with polarizing reactions upon its release, but has since taken its place as one of the funniest and most inventive comedies of the 1980s.
