Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater
Dir. Barry Levinson. 1984, 138 mins. 35mm. With Robert Redford, Glenn Close, Robert Duvall, Kim Basinger, Wilford Brimley. Right before his chance to try out for the Chicago Cubs, Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford) is seriously injured. Now a middle-aged rookie, he gets his shot at redemption when he is signed to the struggling New York Knights. Glenn Close plays Hobbs’s “Lady in White”—the incandescent high school sweetheart who comes back to save the day—in Barry Levinson’s classic adaptation of Bernard Malamud’s novel. Not only is The Natural one of the great sports movies of all time, it also showcased Close’s seemingly infinite range, with an Academy Award–nominated performance a million miles from her previous Oscar-recognized turns in The World According to Garp and The Big Chill.
