The Wife
Sunday, December 2, 2018, 4:00 p.m.
Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater
Dir. Bjorn Runge. 2017, 100 mins. DCP. With Glenn Close, Jonathan Pryce, Christian Slater, Elizabeth McGovern. Glenn Close gives a contained, assured performance as Joan Castleman, the underestimated wife of an acclaimed novelist (Jonathan Pryce) in this year’s suspenseful character study The Wife. At first, Joan seems like the ideal supportive partner: She is thrilled when her husband wins the Nobel Prize, and enjoys playing the calm counterpart to his performative creator. But an inquiring journalist (Christian Slater) intercepts the couple in Stockholm, convinced that Joan has more of a role than she will admit, and forces her to come to terms with her marriage, her past, and her ambition.
