Dir. Peter Yates. 1987, 121 mins. 35mm. With Cher, Dennis Quaid, Liam Neeson. This atmospheric political thriller courtesy of English director Peter Yates (The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Bullitt) stars Cher as a Washington, D.C. public defender assigned to represent Liam Neeson’s deaf-mute Vietnam veteran, who has been accused of killing a Justice Department file clerk. Juror Dennis Quaid offers to help find evidence to build her defense, and the ethically dubious teaming only gets more complicated with the blossoming of romance. Yates combines crackerjack courtroom drama with a brooding depiction of the isolation shared by both overworked white-collar professionals and Neeson’s drifter, in a serious, cerebral turn for Cher.
