Dir. Richard Benjamin. 1990, 110 mins. 35mm. With Cher, Bob Hoskins, Winona Ryder. The year is 1963. The Sixties are about to lose their innocence, Ryder’s fifteen-year-old Rachel is on the cusp of young adulthood, and her free-spirit single mother (Cher) has just uprooted the family—comprised of Rachel and her nine-year-old sister Kate (Christina Ricci)—from Oklahoma to Eastport, Massachusetts. Soon the little family will endure televised assassinations, the Jewish Rachel’s emerging fetish for Catholicism, and brushes with immaculate conception and family tragedy. A warm wonderful movie which, driven by Cher’s force-of-nature performance, encompasses all the terror and tenderness of family ties.
