Museum of the Moving Image - Bartos Screening Room
Dir. Hirokazu Kore-eda. 2018. 121 mins. Digital projection. In Japanese with English subtitles. With Lily Franky, Sakura Ando, Mayu Matsuoka, Kirin Kiki, Jyo Kairi, Miyu Sasaki. On the margins of Tokyo, a dysfunctional band of outsiders are united by fierce loyalty, a penchant for petty theft and playful grifting. When the young son is arrested, secrets are exposed that upend their tenuous, below-the-radar existence and test their quietly radical belief that it is love—not blood—that defines a family. An exquisitely crafted, superbly acted, and customarily heartfelt new film from Hirokazu Kore-eda (After Life, After the Storm), Shoplifters was awarded the 2018 Cannes Palme d'Or and has been shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
