Dir. Preston Sturges. 1941, 94 mins. 35mm.With Barbara Stanwyck, Henry Fonda, Charles Coburn. The laughs come at a furious clip in this comic masterpiece by Preston Sturges, starring Stanwyck as a con-artist who seduces a naïve, wealthy snake collector (a lovably naive Henry Fonda) while aboard a cruise ship. Naturally, she falls for the rube, further complicating her deceptions. Enhanced by Edith Head’s take-no-prisoners outfits, including a midriff-baring two piece and a lacy white dress, Stanwyck commands the screen with easy, brassy sexiness.
