Dir. William Wyler. 1953, 118 mins. 35mm.With Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck, Eddie Albert. In her first starring role, as a princess disguised as an ordinary civilian in Rome who falls for a handsome newspaper journalist (Gregory Peck), Audrey Hepburn instantly became a style icon, boosted by Edith Head’s enchanting costume ensemble, which had to convincingly convey both everygirl mundanity and regal beauty. Both Hepburn and Head won Oscars for this fleet, near-perfect romantic comedy, a testament to the versatility of Hollywood workhorse William Wyler.
