Museum of the Moving Image - Bartos Screening Room

Dir. René Clair. 1942, 77 mins. 16mm. With Veronica Lake, Fredric March, Susan Hayward. In this beloved supernatural comedy, Veronica Lake is a centuries-old witch who returns to present-day New England to exact vengeance on the descendants of the Puritans who sentenced her to death. Instead, she finds herself infatuated with her prey (Fredric March), a politician who might need a love potion to steal him away from his bride to be. French director René Clair’s Hollywood jaunt is an enchanting, often hilarious mood piece with Lake taking center stage in one of her most appealing roles.
