Dir. Alfred Hitchcock. 1946, 102 mins. 35mm. With Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant, Claude Rains. Personal and political loyalties, romance and duty, seduction and suspicion—Hecht masterfully weaves all of these together in this, one of Hitchcock’s most irresistible thrillers. Cary Grant’s government agent recruits good-time girl Alicia (Ingrid Bergman), the daughter of a disgraced American Nazi agent, to use her name to infiltrate a cabal of expat Third Reichers in Rio de Janeiro. But things get complicated when, after they have fooled around, fallen in love, and shared one of the longest kisses in cinema, Alicia has to marry the leader of the Nazi pack, debonair mother’s boy Claude Rains. Elegant and erotic, every second of Notorious is charged with sinister import.
