Dir. Mike Leigh. 1999, 154 mins. 35mm. With Jim Broadbent, Allan Corduner, Dexter Fletcher, Sukie Smith, Timothy Spall. In Mike Leigh's first foray into historical drama, we meet world-famous English duo Gilbert and Sullivan as they prepare, cast, stage, and premiere their legendary 1885 comic opera The Mikado. The Victorian librettist and composer, played by Jim Broadbent and Allan Corduner, respectively, collaborate with a temperamental cast of characters to mount a major, highly anticipated and sharply scrutinized production. Winner of Academy Awards for costume design and makeup (and nominated for two more) Topsy-Turvy brims with the wild, unpredictable lives that inform and underlie otherwise exactingly composed works of art.
