Dir. Carlos Reygadas. 2012, 115 mins. DCP courtesy Strand Releasing. In Spanish, English and French with Subtitles. With Nathalia Acevedo, Rut Reygadas, Adolfo Jiménez Castro. An upscale, urban family’s move to the Mexican countryside results in domestic crises and class friction in Post Tenebras Lux (Light After Darkness), Reygadas’ wildly ambitious, unpredictable, and mysterious cri de coeur. Combining impressionistic psychological portraiture and consistently revelatory photography of the natural world, the film sustains a tone of creeping unease despite a variety of scenes and textures. From a lightning-punctuated sequence at dusk as Reygadas’ real-life daughter wanders among farm animals in a muddy field, to the sudden appearance of a glowing-red demon gliding through the rooms of a home, to a visit to a swingers’ bathhouse, Reygadas offers a surrealistic journey that remains rooted in body and (disquieted) mind. “Entrancingly beautiful. As beguiling a cinematic object as one is likely to encounter… A personal work in which autobiographical content is lyrically transfigured and elevated to cosmic heights.” – Dan Sullivan, Film Comment.
Preceded by Aficionados (2014, 4 mins), in Reygadas’ contribution to an omnibus film offering a kaleidoscopic view of soccer around the world, we watch various combinations of people, in various states of mind and mood, as they watch the game.
