With Carlos Reygadas and Natalia López in person
Dir. Carlos Reygadas, 2018, 173 mins. DCP courtesy Monument Releasing. In Spanish and English with Subtitles. With Natalia López, Phil Burgers, Carlos Reygadas. The newest film by Carlos Reygadas is an epic of intimacy, a journey within and without, expansive and achingly personal. A family lives in the Mexican countryside raising fighting bulls. Ester is in charge of running the ranch, while her husband Juan, a world-renowned poet, raises and selects the beasts. Experimenting with an open marriage, their relationship starts to crumble when Ester begins an affair with an American horsebreaker and Juan is unable to control his jealousy. Reygadas and his real-life partner, film editor Natalia López, play the couple in crisis, but that’s only one of many reminders of the wider, wilder world beyond the frame. View trailer.
