Dir. Henri Verneuil. 1969, 121 min. DCP courtesy of 20th Century Fox. In French with English subtitles. With Jean Gabin, Lino Ventura, Alain Delon. This bold, brash and expensive Morricone-scored gangster classic reunites three of the great tough guys of French cinema: Jean Gabin, Lino Ventura and Alain Delon, in an epic mafia heist caper set in Paris, Rome and New York. Ventura is the cop relentlessly pursuing Delon’s jewel thief and his association with Gabin’s Sicilian mafia don. Verneuil directs complex three-narrative strands as if he were in an armchair and Melville fixture Henri Decaë provides – against type - the brassy colour camerawork.
