Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater
Dir. Henri Verneuil. 1962, 105 min. 16mm print courtesy of Institut français, thanks to the Cultural Services of the French Embassy. In French with English subtitles. With Jean Gabin, Suzanne Flon, Jean-Paul Belmondo. An emblematic title for Verneuil and one of the all time great drunk films. Two men obsessed with far off places meet by chance in a tiny Normandy town. Gabin - an ex-Marine who fought in China; now a hotelier - and Belmondo, a young lover dreaming of Spain, with a daughter in the local boarding school he doesn’t properly know. A legendary duo in their cups for two days, force-fed reams of Michel Audiard dialogue for the ages. Watch out for Belmondo dodging speeding vehicles: hinting at the adventures to come.
