Any Number Can Win (Melodie en sous-sol)
Saturday, July 27, 2019, 6:30 p.m.
Museum of the Moving Image - Bartos Screening Room
Dir. Henri Verneuil. 1963, 118 min. 35mm print courtesy of Institut français, thanks to the Cultural Services of the French Embassy. In French with English subtitles. With Jean Gabin, Alain Delon. It was Verneuil who introduced the titan Jean Gabin to the two men who would grapple to succeed him at the top of the pantheon of French movie tough guys: Belmondo in A Monkey in Winter and Delon in Any Number Can Win. This American-style riviera heist film plays off the grizzled cynicism of older statesman Gabin and the cocky, disrespectful Delon (who in reality idolized Gabin above everyone but himself). An early showcase for Verneuil’s skill for suspense and character, Any Number Can Win also boasts sumptuous photography from Gremillon veteran Louis Page.
