Dir. Nobuhiko Obayashi. 1977, 88 mins. 35mm. In Japanese with English subtitles. With Kimiko Ikegami, Miki Jinbo, Ai Matubara, Kumiko Oba. Gorgeous, a Japanese schoolgirl annoyed by her father’s new love interest, heads to the country with a passel of her best friends only to discover their destination is haunted through and through. They’re hit by the inexplicable almost immediately upon arrival and soon the girls are being singled out and eviscerated in increasingly gruesome fashion by features of the house itself. The nonsensical plotting is alleged to have been generated at least in part by the stream-of-conscious mutterings of Obayashi’s pre-teen daughter, and the film throughout is a banquet of child-like surrealism. Hausu is a near-unclassifiable oddity, a cult cinematic whatsit that’s also a deliriously spooky good time.
