Museum of the Moving Image - Bartos Screening Room
Dir. Yorgos Lanthimos. 2005, 95 min. Digital projection. Greek with English subtitles. With Aris Servetalis, Evangelia Randou, Costas Xikominos. The first feature of celebrated international auteur Yorgos Lanthimos takes place in a desolate Greek resort town where three tenuously connected people are motivated by mysterious impulses. A plain-clothes cop pursues triple passions for cars, tape recorders and Russian women; a lonely, lovesick clerk works as a part-time photographer; and a hotel maid aspires to be an actress through unconventional methods. Never before released in the United States, this darkly comic and insinuatingly hypnotic film comprises the extraordinary debut from Lanthimos, whose first three films (Kinetta, Dogtooth, The Alps) defined the Greek New Wave before shifting to English language films, including Academy Award nominees The Lobster and The Favourite. A Kino Lorber release.
Followed by Dogtooth
Dir. Yorgos Lanthimos. 2009, 97 min. Digital projection. Greek with English subtitles. With Christos Stergioglou, Michele Valley, Angeliki Papoulia. Lanthimos’ arthouse breakthrough is a study of home-schooling gone fantastically awry. A maniacally overprotective couple confine their three adolescent children to a gated compound wherein cultural deprivation and strict codes of conduct are the law. When the father brings home a young woman to sate his son's convulsive sexual urges, the family's engineered "reality" begins to crumble, with devastating consequences. Elegant, enigmatic, and frequently terrifying, Dogtooth is an ingenious work of 21st century absurdism that punctuates its tense, deliberate progress with sudden bursts of violence and sharp blows of humor.
