A Live Performance by Zia Anger
Dir. Zia Anger. 2019, 75 mins. Live Performance & Digital projection. This multimedia performance from moving image artist Zia Anger finds her staging live interactions with on-screen media and the audience, using real-time text, spontaneous Google searches, audience directives and AirDrops. Anger deconstructs her unrealized projects to re-imagine the relationship between the audience, the filmmaker, and the movie theater, while erasing the line between an artist's physical body and their cinematic corpus. A richly suggestive piece that likewise explores what it means to be a woman and an artist in today's context, My First Film answers the anxieties of a post-cinema world by confronting them head on. “Anger confronts one of the principal frustrations of independent filmmaking: the creation of a film that fails to get any release at all...and in My First Film, she does something about it—and, in the process, creates an altogether new and daring work of art.” - Richard Brody, The New Yorker
