Ikarie XB-1

Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater
Dir. Jindřich Polák. 1963, 88 mins. DCP. With Zdeněk Štěpánek, František Smolík, Dana Medřická. In Czech with English subtitles. Kubrick was impressed by this eerie and singular film, a depiction of a 22nd-century voyage beyond the solar system which was called a “Space Marienbad.” The self-contained world of the film, on a spaceship intended to be a model of socialist civilization, clearly gave Kubrick ideas about visual style, sets, and costumes. The film is also notable for its psychological acuity and its depiction of the monotony of space travel. Ikarie XB-1 was titled Voyage to the End of the Universe in its English-dubbed release.
