Nosferatu
With live score performed by The Flushing Remonstrance
Dir. F.W. Murnau. Germany, 1922, 94 mins. With Max Schreck. The groundbreaking German director F. W. Murnau all but invented the horror film for the modern era with this unnerving—and unofficial—adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. Elegant expressionist visuals make this a work of poetic silent horror, but it’s Schreck’s terrifying makeup and performance that make this film truly unforgettable. The Flushing Remonstrance are the duo of Catherine Cramer (percussion, electronics) and Robert Kennedy (keyboards, electronics, voice). They compose and perform their own scores to films.
Dir. Mel Brooks. US, 1974, 106 mins. With Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn, Teri Garr. Mel Brooks's comedy smash is the rare film that both mercilessly spoofs and sincerely celebrates a genre, here the black-and-white horror films of the 1930s. Nominated for two Oscars and featuring gorgeous cinematography by Gerald Hirschfeld, this legendarily quotable film features Wilder as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced Frankensteen!), American grandson of the infamous scientist. Hell-bent on proving himself, the semi-mad doctor enlists the help of a borscht-belt Igor (Feldman). Chaos, hilarity, and syncopated soft-shoe jazz performances ensue.
