Touchstones of contemporary Black American cinema directed by F. Gary Gray: the ultimate hangout comedy and a biopic of hip-hop group N.W.A.
Friday
Dir. F. Gary Gray. U.S., 1995, 91 mins. With Ice Cube, Chris Tucker, John Witherspoon, Bernie Mac, Regina King, Nia Long, Tom Lister Jr., Anna Maria Horsford. Over the course of one mundanely hilarious Friday, Craig Jones (Ice Cube) deals with the aftermath of being fired from his job and the misadventures of his pot-smoking friend Smokey (Chris Tucker). One of the most celebrated comedies of the ’90s, Friday delivers constant laughs in a screenplay co-written by Ice Cube and rapper-producer DJ Pooh; winning supporting performances by Witherspoon as Craig’s brutally honest dad and Bernie Mac as a lascivious pastor; and an energetic soundtrack featuring Cypress Hill, 2 Live Crew, Dr. Dre, Rick James, and of course, Ice Cube’s own “Friday.” Rated: R
Straight Outta Compton
Dir. F. Gary Gray. U.S., 2015, 147 mins. With O'Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Neil Brown Jr., Aldis Hodge, Paul Giamatti, LaKeith Stanfield. Straight Outta Compton is a masterful biopic about gangsta rap group N.W.A, whose music spoke out against racism and aggressive policing. In dramatizing the lives of these pioneering Black artists, who fight for survival in their poverty-stricken neighborhood, Gray carves out a riveting true story of fame, power, and betrayal. With superb performances from Jason Mitchell (as Eazy-E) and O’Shea Jackson Jr. (portraying his real-life father, Ice Cube); expressive cinematography by Matthew Libatique; and an incisive, Oscar-nominated screenplay, Straight Outta Compton is a significant work befitting its already legendary subject. Rated: R
