Dir. George Lucas. U.S., 1977, 121 mins. With Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Peter Cushing, Alec Guinness. A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, farm boy Luke Skywalker (Hamill) meets a wandering old sage named Obi Wan Kenobi (Guinness). After regaling him with tales of interplanetary threats and hazy personal connections to it all, Kenobi sweeps Luke off to space in a rickety ship flown by a cocky captain (Ford) and his hirsute co-pilot with ambitions to save a beautiful princess (Fisher) as well as the galaxy from evil forces led by the menacing Darth Vader. Few films have had more of an impact on popular culture than this box office juggernaut, which cannily stirred together elements of early cinema serials, westerns, sci-fi epics, mythological quest narratives, and more, all executed by a group of ingenious visual and sound effects artists who would define American fantasy filmmaking well into the 21st century. Rated: PG
