Dir. Haruo Sotozaki. 2020, 117 mins. DCP. In Japanese with English subtitles. Picking up where season one of the popular anime series Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) ended, Mugen Train dazzles with action, emotion, and the vibrant visual style of Japanese studio Ufotable. In Taisho-era Japan, a colorful league of guardians defends humans from man-eating demons, and the quartet of rookie fighters Tanjiro, Nezuko, Inosuke, and Zenitsu are sent on their first major mission to protect the passengers of a cross-country train, joining the rugged, flame-haired senior slayer Kyojuro Rengoku in facing a demon who locks victims into dream states. All the qualities that series fans love are represented here—the goofy humor, the characters’ back stories, outrageous villainy, and explosive swordplay—leading to a gut-wrenching finale. Demon Slayer grew in popularity worldwide during the pandemic, and this movie became the top-grossing anime film ever in Japan, surpassing Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away. View trailer.
Rated R; recommended for ages 12+ for violence and bloodshed.
