Dir. Tod Browning. 1931, 75 mins. 35mm. With Bela Lugosi, Helen Chandler, Dwight Frye, Edward Van Sloan, David Manners. After real estate agent Renfield (Frye) surrenders his sanity in Transylvania, Count Dracula (Lugosi) lands in London, where he hunts for the blood of innocent young women on foggy London nights. Dracula is met with resistance, though, when he turns his attention towards Mina Seward and comes face-to-face with Professor Van Helsing, who vows to vanquish the vampiric count once and for all. Lugosi’s sinister and sensual portrayal of Dracula and Karl Freund’s atmospheric cinematography drive this definitive adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel that continues to influence the horror genre and pop culture at large.
