Dir. Robert Florey. 1932, 62 mins. 35mm. With Bela Lugosi, Sidney Fox, Leon Ames, Bert Roach, D'Arcy Corrigan, Arlene Franic. An innocuous evening at the carnival veers into sacrilege when Dr. Mirakle (Lugosi) suggests to his audience that humans evolved from apes. As outraged viewers storm out, Mirakle’s attention is caught by Mademoiselle Camille L'Espanaye (Fox), whom he aims to use in his experiments to prove his theories by mixing human blood with that of his ape, Erik—experiments which have already led to the death of three prostitutes and are being investigated by Pierre Dupin (Ames), Camille’s boyfriend. Murders in the Rue Morgue marks the first cinematic adaptation of a work by Edgar Allan Poe, whose macabre manifestations are eerily realized by Karl Freund’s cinematography and eldritch performance by Lugosi.
