A Room with a View
Dir. James Ivory. 1986, 117 mins. DCP. With Helena Bonham Carter, Maggie Smith, Julian Sands, Daniel Day-Lewis, Denholm Elliott, Simon Callow, Judi Dench. This exquisite and captivating adaptation of E. M. Forster’s 1908 novel was a box-office and critical sensation that was the rare art-house film to break through to the mainstream, officially turning director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant into household names. In her first movie role, Bonham Carter is Lucy Honeychurch, a young, upper-middle-class English woman who falls for the handsome if taciturn George Emerson (Sands) while on vacation in Florence, disrupting her engagement to the fussy Cecil (Day-Lewis) back in England. This Edwardian comedy of manners is one of the great movie love stories, sly and irreverent while maintaining a romantic ecstasy, and featuring spectacular cinematography and set design, and a clever, layered Oscar-winning script by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala.
Tickets: $20 / $15 MoMI members. Copies of the book will be available for sale in the Museum Shop.
